Both houses of the state legislature approved SB 1160, and it is awaiting the governor’s signature. Gov. Abbott has 20 days to sign or veto the bill.

The bill creates a special taxing district in Gulf Coast counties to pay for the Ike Dike, a massive flood gate stretching from Galveston Island to the Bolivar Peninsula. This will protect the pet-rochemical industry from a storm surge if a major hurricane scores a direct hit.
