State Rep. Mayes Middleton filed legislation that would ban local governments from hiring lobbyists. Sounds reasonable. No one wants to use taxpayer funds to hire Austin lobbyists.

Middleton estimates that up to $41 million was spent on lobbyists by local governments. That is a large sum of money, but this figure is absolutely dwarfed by the amount of money spent by business and non-profit political groups.

Excellent analysis of a bill in search of a problem to solve. Municipal lobbying is not a problem.
