A local state senator has announced he plans to run for Houston mayor at the end of the 88th Texas Legislative Session.

State Senator John Whitmire, D-Houston, 72, was a Texas House member for 10 years before running for the State Senate seat in District 6 in 1983. Although Whitmire said he plans to run for re-election next year, he told audience members at the Post Oak Hotel in Houston that he plans to run for mayor of Houston and succeed Mayor Sylvester Turner in November 2023.
