With golden shovels and hardhats to match, city officials and Baytown area dignitaries threw dirt in the air, signifying the beginning of the construction of a 208-room Hyatt Regency luxury hotel and convention center. The idea of constructing a hotel/convention center on the island dates back to at least the 1990s. The grand-opening of the hotel and convention center is 18 months away, city officials said Wednesday. (Baytown Sun photo by Carol Skewes)
