Less than 10 days after being assigned to the battleship USS Tennessee, Navy gunnery officer Boyd Lamb and more than 1,000 of his shipmates found themselves in the middle of an historic World War II battle.

The Tennessee, one of the most storied vessels in naval history, would be engaged in the 1944 battle of the Surigao Strait in the Philippines, identified by military historians as the last battleship-to-battleship confrontation of the war.
