BH, RSS golfers warm to GC event

Morgan Wright and Alex Turbeville fired scores of 77 and 78 to lead the way at Monday’s Goose Creek CISD Invitational at Goose Creek Country Club with Sterling’s Taylor Nethery finishing third at 79.

On a windy day at the Baytown course, Barbers Hill topped the team scoring for the 12-school event with a total score of 318 and Sterling finishing second at 333. Baytown Christian finished fifth at 370.

Joining Wright and Turbeville for the winning Eagles team were Klay Kirksey at 80, Caleb Stork at 83 and Chris Horn at 90.

Sterling’s varsity scores other than Nethery’s were David Brister at 80, Zach Benevides and Tim Reilly both at 87 and Mason Hancock at 88.

BCA’s low scorer was Caleb Asp, whose 79 matched Nethery for third-lowest of the day. Nethery, however, won a scorecard playoff to take home the trophy.

Other Bulldog scorers were Adam Peterson at 81, Jake Dodds at 104, Joseph Villareal at 106, Andrew Asp at 113 and Nick Rodriguez at 117.

Sterling’s B team finished 10th with Kyle Murray leading at 89, Taylor Bigham scoring 94, Scott Sinclair 98 and Collin Nethery at 121.

Lee’s golfers, led by a 96 from Chris Torres, finished 11th. Austin Cobb and Juan Lopez each shot 99 for the Ganders and Sam Shroyer finished at 121.

Goose Creek Memorial finished 12th, led by a 98 from Zach Houchins. Other scores were T.J. May at 114, Dalton Gardner at 121, Bryce Morgan at 124 and Jeff Machala at 131.

The Goose Creek girls’ tournament, held a week earlier at Goose Creek Country Club, was shortened to nine holes by rainy weather. Kingwood Park won the event, with Barbers Hill’s girls second and Sterling’s girls fourth.

Alyssa Buffum led Sterling by finishing 11-over, which tied her for fourth place. Brittany Buffum was 16-over followed by Katie Hawks and Lauren Wilson, both at 24-over, and Mallory Nailon at 30-over.

The Sterling boys played last weekend in the Deer Park Invitational at Battleground Golf Course. The two-day tournament began Friday under rainy and windy conditions and wrapped up Saturday.

Sterling finished eighth out of 15 teams, with Zach Benavides tying for fourth after rounds of 76-78 – 154. Other scorers were David Brister, 85-81 – 166; Taylor Nethery, 92-83 – 175; Tim Reilly, 89-88 – 177; and Mason Hancock, 95-97 – 192.
