Enrique Juarez is always ready to go the extra mile for his daughter, and so were many other proud papas Friday at the ninth annual Daddy and Me Valentines Dance held at the Baytown Community Center.
Amid the balloons with streamers, soft lighting and tiny primped debutantes, Bianca Juarez held especially close to her father, who drove for two hours just to dance with his daughter.
Juarez, who works as an electrical supervisor in Winchester, said Friday’s dance was an engagement he couldn’t miss.
“We planned to come last year, and I couldn’t make it due to work,” he said. “I made a promise to Bianca that we would make it this year.”
Sponsored by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, the dance is something that Kevin Helm and daughters Hailey and Allison look forward to.
This year marked the fourth time that 9-year-old Hailey has attended the dance. She gently pulled her dad behind her as she made her way through the crowd of father-daughter dates, checking off tasks from a carefully planned agenda. Sister Allison, 5, was all smiles as she took in the spectacle of her first dance.
“This is pretty,” Allison said. “I like the balloons. I can’t wait to dance with Daddy.”
Helm said he was apprehensive about coming four years ago, but now the event has become a cherished family event.
“My wife, Stephanie, encouraged me to bring Allison my first year and it was great,” he said. “I love seeing their faces light up and spending time with both my girls.”
Justin Heart was attending his first dance, but was more than happy to twirl 7-year-old daughter Kylie out on the dance floor. He said the dance was a surprise ending to a carefully orchestrated plot.
“My wife took her on a girl’s day out,” Heart said. “I showed up afterwards in a suit ready for the dance; Kylie never saw it coming.”
