LC opens up spring tennis season with win

The Lee College Lady Rebel scored a 5-4 win over four-year school Tarleton State Friday to open its spring season on the first day of the Lady Rebel Invitational on the school’s courts.

No. 1 player Nadia Lee and freshmen Dionicia Akina and Manuela Gomez collected a pair of wins each.

Lee took a 6-3, 6-4 singles win over Adriana Jaskova and teaming with Akina for an 8-4 doubles victory over Tarleton’s Rocio Cabanillas and Mariana Freitas.

Gomez and Frederique Sunstrum won at No. 2 doubles, dispatching the duo of Jade Charlot and Evgeniya Prokofeva 8-6. Then Gomez scored a 6-3, 6-3 win over Freitas at No. 4 singles.

Akina downed Charlot 7-5, 3-6 (10-3) at No. 3 singles.

The No. 3 Lady Rebels doubles team of Francesca Bassoo and Huong Huynh fell 1-8 to Carole Julen and Jaskova.

Cabanillas downed Sunstrum at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, while Prokofeva beat Bassoo at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3 and Julen breezed past Shana Landry 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

“We played some good tennis today,” LC coach Jason Haynes said. “I was impressed by Manuela and Dionicia; they really played well.

“But we need to play better in some other spots.”

Play continues today as Lee College takes on Trinity University at 10 a.m. and Prairie View A&M at 2 p.m. Prairie View downed Trinity 5-4 Friday.
