The Lee College basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak Wednesday night when it hosted Panola College. The Rebels came away with an 89-79 win.

Josh Micheaux led the Rebels with 17 points. Kevin Johnson scored 14 and Jekore Tyler and Cedric Martin each scored 11 points.

The Bulldogs were led by Gary Cox with 20 points and Lorenzo McCloud finished with 11.

The Rebels are currently a game up on Lon Morris in Region XIV’s South Zone and the win keeps them above Panola in conference play with an overall record of 11-17 and 5-7 in conference play as they look to Saturday when they travel to take on Navarro College.

“We’re looking forward to playing another game in the South Zone,” Lee College coach Roy Champagne said. “Navarro is a good athletic team so hopefully we can come away with the win.

“There’s a lot at stake as we move forward and try to make the regional tournament. We have to be able to protect our home court but also have to be able to win on the road.”

After Wednesday night’s win, Champagne said he was relieved more than anything.

“It’s a big relief,” he said. “It wouldn’t have been anything season-ending but it was a must win. We really needed it.”

Although the win was good for the Rebels, Champagne won’t let his team rest on one game’s laurels.

“We can’t even really talk about being confident,” he said. “We have too much to work on. We lose focus too easily. We didn’t kill ourselves at the free-throw line but we did enough to get the job done.”

The Rebels took an early 5-0 lead but the first of six straight lead changes shortly followed.

A jumper from Antone Byrd and a pair of free throws from Greg Batieste and Jacob McDonald gave the Rebels a comfortable 19-14 lead.

Lee College put it on cruise control for the rest of the half, and a 3-pointer from Nick James lifted the Rebels to a 48-33 lead at the half.

Even though there were close moments in the second half, the Rebels kept the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs opened the second half by scoring 10 of the 12 next points and narrowed the lead to five points. Moments later, they were knocking on the door, trailing the Rebels 59-58.

A Lee College timeout may have served as a wake-up call. Micheaux and Alex-Scotland-Williamson responded in huge fashion. They combined for all the scoring in a 12-0 run by Lee that put their team up 71-58.

Seven points was the closest the Bulldogs came to the Rebels for the remainder of the game, as they sent Lee College to free-throw line, where they sealed up the win.

The Rebels are scheduled to play the remainder of their home games on Wednesday nights. They host Angelina College Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. and Jacksonville College Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
