But area high school basketball fans have one thing on their mind this time of year: The Gulf Coast Classic.
The annual holiday basketball tournament hosted by Barbers Hill High School is celebrating its 19th year Monday through Wednesday at three different locations on Eagle Drive.
A total of 12 boys and 14 girls teams will take part in the three-day event, with games set for both gyms at the high school and at the Field House.
Action begins on all three courts at 9 a.m. Monday and the final game, the championship of the boys bracket, is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Field House.
Barbers Hill’s boys won the title last year, 58-50 over Cleveland, for their first win in the homecourt tourney since 2005.
The Barbers Hill girls reached the title game but fell, 44-37, to Hastings, which has won Classic championships the past two years.
Sterling won the boys consolation title, 70-48 over Spring Dekaney, while the Sterling girls reached the tourney semifinals.
Joining Barbers Hill and Sterling in this year’s boys bracket are Baytown Lee, Anahuac, Dayton and Pasadena. Also, Huffman, Livingston, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Nederland, Montgomery and C.E. King.
