The Associated Press Sports Editors were impressed with the Anahuac Panthers.
Three senior members of the District 23-2A runnerup squad earned honorable mention on the All-State Class 2A football team for 2009.
They were receiver Braxton Mayes, defensive end Thaddius Johnson and defensive back Zach Smith.
The only other area player named on any of the five AP All-State teams was Dayton senior nose tackle Tony Hill, who earned a spot on the Class 4A second team.
Mayes caught 27 passes for 734 yards and 13 touchdowns this season to lead the Panther offense in an 8-3 season.
Johnson registered 63 tackles, 14 behind the line, and 11 quarterback sacks while coming up with three fumble recoveries.
Smith was in on 100 tackles for the Panthers and logged one sack.
Hill was the District 19-4A defensive MVP. The four-year starter for the Broncos had 93 tackles, 22 behind the line, and seven sacks in his final season.
