Houston Raceway Park, the world class drag strip located east of Baytown, has been named the National Guard American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Track of the Year for 2009.

Seth Angel, HRP general manager, was unable to attend the award ceremony held in Orlando, Fla., last weekend, but expressed his gratitude.

“Just to be considered for this award is really a huge honor,” he said.

“As great as it is though, the award isn’t so much about the track itself. It’s more about the team members here.

“They work day in and day out to serve the community and they provide a venue to entertain families throughout all the year. It’s nice for the entire staff to receive recognition.”

The award was given for the facility being well managed and for being a good source of entertainment.

Angel said because his staff works around the clock, the award came as no surprise.

“Not to sound cocky but I wasn’t surprised at all,” he said. “I know the team we have here and have seen how hard everyone has worked. They’re committed to being extremely professional and providing a fun and safe environment. As a team as a whole, we’re certainly honored.”

Angel encourages families and people of all ages to come out to the track and says there is something for people of every age.

“We have a wide variety of events,” he said. “There’s always something going on that will keep everyone entertained.”

The fan favorite ADRL Dragpalooza VI will make its return March 12-13, and the 23rd running of the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals will roll through Houston Raceway Park, April 9-11.

The complete 2010 racing calendar for both the drag strip and HRP’s 1/4-mile oval track is now available on HRP’s Web site at www.houstonraceway.com .

On Saturday, Jan. 16, HRP will host a banquet to celebrate the achievements of the past year.

“It’s an annual awards banquet we host to honor drag racers and anyone involved,” Angel said. “Sometimes we have it in December and sometimes in January. We recognize the racers and the champions and thank them for their participation.”

The banquet is sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts and will be held in the new Tower Club at the park. Over $5,000 in prizes will be given to those in attendance.

“We expect a couple hundred people there,” Angel said. “That’s about the average attendance each year. All racers who have participated will be there as well as family and friends and we encourage anyone who wants to come out to do so.”

In order to purchase tickets to the event, you can log on to the web at www.HoustonRaceway.com or call 281-383-7223. The deadline to purchase tickets is Jan. 8.
