Priscilla Massengale received an early Christmas present this week.
The Louisiana Sports Writers Association named the Baytown Sterling grad Louisiana Volleyball Freshman of the Year.
The 5-foot-10 outside hitter had earlier been named to the 2009 All-Southland Confer-ence volleyball team as an honorable mention selection.
The honors were consolation for the fact that McNeese State just missed qualifying for the Southland Conference tournament last month, finishing the season 17-13 overall and 5-11 and fifth place in the league’s East Zone.
Massengale led the Cowgirls with 3.09 kills per set and was second on the team with 334 kills. She ended her rookie season with 24 assists, 225 digs, 42 blocks and 22 service aces. She recorded 10 or more kills in 17 matches and had a career high 22 against Southeastern Louisiana in the season finale.
She is only the second McNeese athlete to win the Louisiana Freshman of the Year honor. Annisa Parker earned the honor in 1997.
A four-year letterman at Sterling, Massengale was District 21-5A Most Valuable Player in 2008, when she led the Lady Rangers to their first district championship since 1997.
The daughter of Timmy and Denice Massengale was a second-team all-district pick as a junior.
