The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for motivated people to work for local offices in and around the Houston area for the 2010 Census.

Positions are available with pay ranging from $8 to $24 per hour. Relocation is not required; new hires will work where they live.

Applicants must take a 30-minute basic skills test, which consists of 28 multiple-choice questions that will measure knowledge of basic math, reading and organization skills.

Local census employees will work to ensure that the 2010 Census takes a clear snapshot of the nation. Data is used in allocating more than $400 billion in federal funds annually to state and local governments.

“It is imperative that we hire community members to work for their community in this vital count,” said Gabriel Sanchez, the Census Bureau’s director for the Dallas Region.

Census Day is April 1, 2010. The Census Bureau’s Dallas Region has commenced operations to ensure that every person will be counted.

A total of eight local census offices are in various stages of opening in Houston and the surrounding counties. The offices will need to recruit and employ about 16,000 people during the 2010 census operations.
