MONT BELVIEU — No way will it be the toughest district game the Barbers Hill girls will have to play this basketball season, but they’d have a hard time being more prepared.

The Lady Eagles were in a league of their own Tuesday night at the Eagle Field House, racing to a 22-0 lead and finally claiming a 75-27 win over Crosby in the District 19-4A opener for both teams.

Truth be told, both teams may have suffered from some opening-night jitters.

Neither team scored for the first 31/2 minutes and Barbers Hill was 0 for 11 from the floor before Kendall Shaw scored off a lob from Jordan Cobb to get things started.

Shaw, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, scored five of the Lady Eagles first 15 points before spending much of the second period and practically all of the second half on the bench.

But with only nine players on his roster, BH coach John Chancellor could only substitute so much.

Jasmine Carter led Barbers Hill scorers with 16 points and Carli Manchaca finished with 15. Shaw scored four second-half points to finish with nine.

All nine of the Lady Eagle players scored at least three points.

Becky Guillory led Crosby with eight points scored and Sarah Guillory and Alexis Lewis scored five points each.

Barbers Hill improved to 8-2 on the season while Crosby fell to 5-7.

Crosby was held scoreless for the first full quarter and the opening two minutes of the second period before Alea Godfrey hit a jumper from the free-throw lane with 5:59 left in the first half.

The Lady Cougars trailed 37-4 at intermission, having coughed up at least 20 turnovers. Their shot chart charitably showed two baskets for 20 attempts in the first two quarters.

The action wasn’t nearly as one-sided in the second half, but the Lady Eagles were able to creep out to leads of 40 points (47-7 midway through the third quarter) and 50 points (67-17 midway through the final period).

The Lady Eagles play this weekend in the Spring Branch tournament while Crosby hosts Atascocita at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
