MONT BELVIEU — The Lee Ganders were unable to climb the Hill as they took on the Barbers Hill Eagles on Friday night, falling 61-46.
The loss drops the Ganders to 0-2.
The Ganders were led by Rhamael Scott, who scored 24 points. Right behind him were Jaevon Richardson and Ruben Xavier each with 10 points. Richardson grabbed six boards on the night.
The game was close early on as the Ganders had a 10-6 lead, but a couple of trips to the basket from Barbers Hill’s Jake Miller helped give the Eagles a 12-10 lead. From that point on, the Eagles didn’t look back and they kept the lead for the rest of the game. Lee went into the locker room at the half down 23-14.
Barbers Hill opened up the second half with a three-pointer to go up 26-14 and eventually cruised its way to a 30-17 lead.
The Ganders made it close late in the third quarter, as Xavier hit a shot in the lane and got fouled. He nailed the free throw to cut the lead 36-30.
Lee head Coach Trent Manuel said the team has improved since its game last week but has more to work to do.
“We’re a young team, and we’re learning as we go,” he said. “I thought we played much better than tonight than we did on Tuesday (against Houston Reagan). Our turnovers were horrendous but I think we did a better job tonight controlling the ball.
“They’re a very good ball club and they showed enough consistency to pull out with the win.”
Late in the game, the Ganders were fouling and started sending the Eagles to the free-throw line where they put the Ganders away.
“We need to work on keeping our composure,” Manuel said. “We are a very good ball club, but we definitely need to improve on that.”
The Ganders will return to action Monday at 7:30 p.m. when they host
Goose Creek Memorial.
Barbers Hill will return to action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when it hits the road to take on Liberty.
Lee girls win second game of season
The Lee girls’ basketball team was able to pull out their second win of the season Friday night when they hosted Alvin, coming away with a 43-31 victory.
The win advances Lee to a record of 2-3 and sets Alvin back to 2-3.
Tyesha Jiles led the way in scoring with 18 points, 12 of which came from beyond the arch in the first half. Shelby Bedinger finished the night with 11 points.

Goose Creek beats Nederland
The Goose Creek Memorial Girls Basketball team was not very gracious to tournament guests in Nederland, winning the its first two games, beating Nederland 66-46 and later beating Kirbyville 41-29.
Da'monae Jackson started off with the hot hand knocking down 11 of the 13 points in the first quarter. The Lady Patriots picked up the scoring pace in the 2nd quarter, scoring 21 points while holding Nederland to 16 for a half time total of 34 to 22. In the second half, Shlisa "Cookie" Jones scored 13 of her 19 points to lead the way for
Memorial. Jackson added 14 while Victoria Carr dropped in 10 off the bench. Courtney Spann and Thompson cleaned up the boards with seven rebounds each. Kara Hanchey finished with five assists.
The girls followed up that game with a win against Kirbyville Friday afternoon. Candice Thompson led a balanced attack with nine points while Katie Larson and Victoria Carr chipped in seven a piece. Head coach Kevin Fletcher was optimistic. "The girls are coming together right now and while we need and will continue to improve, I
like what I see."
Seven seconds before the end of the first half, Fletcher called a time out and called an inbounds play as Abby Bogie helped extend the lead to five at half time.
"This is just an example of our improvement and focus,” Fletcher said. “A year of maturity is making a difference."
The Lady Patriots will try to win its third game of the tournament against Jasper. "We expect them to be physical." "This would be another step in the right direction as the girls continue to learn how to handle higher expectations for the upcoming season.”
The game is set for Saturday at noon.
