New Journey Church and Back Pack Buddies are gearing up for the third annual Adopt-a-Family meal program, and plan to stand in the gap when times are tough for area families in need.
NJC will provide 780 meals to needy families in the Baytown community on Thanksgiving Day. In addition to meals, this year NJC will give over 3,000 toys to needy children in Baytown.
“We like to reach out to our community,” Pastor Mike Breaux said. “It’s a lot easier to meet someone’s spiritual needs if you take care of their physical needs first.”
Each year, the church partners with Back Pack Buddies to provide food, care and toys for the holiday season.
“This is a great time of year to reach people and serve our community,” Breaux said.
Over the past three years, the program has given five lunches a week to hundreds of children on the reduced lunch program in the area. The lunches give the children meals over the weekend, provided by the Houston Food Bank, that they would normally not have.
“Volunteers fill the back packs with five lunches and the children return the bags on Monday,” Breaux said. “It is amazing to see what God has done with this program.”
The Adopt-a-Family meals will be given out Tuesday and the toy giveaway is slated for Dec. 20.
The toys are given to the children on the third Sunday of December during the course of four services.
“There are so many kids we couldn’t fit them into one service,” Breaux said. “At the services, we sing carols, I give away the toys and we send them on their way. We have a lot of fun.”
The church is accepting donations for both events. Donations can be sent to New Journey Church, 5790 N. Main St. Baytown, Texas 77521. Attn: AAF 2009.
