The Lee College Lady Rebels volleyball team may not have advanced to Nationals, but it was awarded several individual awards for the Region XIV Athletic Conference.

Julisa Ocasio was named setter of the year and was also named to the first team All-conference All-American.

Stephanie Salas was named Libero of the Year as well as first team All-Conference.

Ocasio and Salas will be joined on the First Team by Tamara Kitic. Jasmine Marta, Christina Jacinto and Tiara Robinson were named to Second Team All-Conference.

“We are all really excited,” head coach Tracie Johnson said. “It’s been amazing. The things that these girls have done are incredible and hard to do.”

The team went to the Regionals tournament where they beat Wharton in four games with scores of 25-16, 24-26,25-19, 25-22.

After the win, the Lady Rebels advanced to the Region XIV championship, where they took on San Jacinto for the third time this season, and fell short in four games. The match finished with scores of 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 24-26.

“We were six points away from going to nationals,” Johnson said. “It was a real heart-breaker. My girls played hard and represented Lee College very well.”

The girls winning the awards were surprised when their coach told them but said it was more satisfying to see the team do well.

Marta was surprised to hear she was named to second team but says she’s more excited for her teammates.

“We made it to the playoffs,” Tamara Kitic said. “We wanted to go to nationals and we didn’t but we still had a better year than last year.

“A good individual can’t make a team good because it takes several people to work hard and give more every game.”

Johnson said she is pleased with the unselfishness of her team and how they came together collectively.

“I’m very proud of all them,” Johnson said. “Overall, I’d have to say this is the best season I’ve ever had. This is a very good group of girls who love to play volleyball.

“It will be a sad day when they all leave.”
