The Goose Creek Memorial boys didn’t collect a win in their 2009-2010 season opener Tuesday night.

But neither did they receive a beatdown.

Manvel outlasted the Patriots 65-58, outscoring them 36-23 in the second half.

“I’m proud of our kids,” GCM coach Jeff Keener said. “That team beat us by 40 points last year and we got after them tonight. I was real proud of the effort. We just had a couple of mental mistakes.”

The Patriots sparkled in the final 10 minutes of the first half as they turned early deficits of 15-1 and 18-6 into a nine-point, 32-23, lead before going in at intermission with a 35-29 lead.

Dejon Dill, Blaine Hines and Curtis Louis brought GCM back, leading a furious charge that forced eight turnovers while holding Manvel scoreless for nearly five and a half minutes.

Manvel’s Xavier Reed, one of two Maverick players to score 21 points in the game, had 12 of his points in the first five minutes on 4 for 5 shooting from 3-point land.

His fourth 3-ball put the Mavs up 18-6 with 3:05 left in the first quarter. Manvel didn’t score again until Reed hit a pair of free throws with 5:35 left in the first half.

That tied the score at 20-20 after Hines’ tip in of a Jeremy Johnson miss had given the Pats their first lead, 20-18, with 5:43 left in the half.

Hines had eight first-half points to go with 12 by Dill and seven by Louis.

Louis finished as the Pats’ leading scorer with 17 points, Dill had 15 and Hines 10. Joining Reed with 21 points for Manvel was Jhyleon Session.

The Mavs fought back to tie the game 40-40 on a Daniel Fernandez layup with 4:31 left in the third quarter. They were ahead 49-44 late in the third quarter until a Lawrence Creeks 3-pointer pulled Memorial within two at 49-47 at the end of the third.

“They dropped back into a soft zone and we lost our intensity,” Keener said. “Early in the game, we were all fired up. We came out aggressive offensively and defensively, but they slowed it down a little bit and we stood around too much.”

The Patriots won two of their four varsity and subvarsity games against Manvel Tuesday, a bright start in Keener’s eyes.

Next opportunity for the varsity comes Friday at 7:30 p.m., when the Pats host Santa Fe.
