The Sterling Rangers had to fight in order to hold on to their lead Tuesday night as they hosted the Rayburn Texans.

The Rangers built a lead as high as 17 points, but in the end, settled for a three-point win, 56-53.

Sterling head coach Mark Patton was happy with the win but knows his team has some maturing to do.

“We are a very, very young team,” he said. “Eventually, we will be a good ball club but we just need to have that killer instinct. We wanted to put them away early but they (Rayburn) are a very talented team.

“Every year since I’ve been here, we’ve split. I’m guessing that they’ll be playing in the playoffs.”

Patton said his team has to be more careful with the ball and cut down on the turnovers.

“I imagine we had 16 or 18 turnovers,” he said. “We just need to be more disciplined with the ball.”

Leading the way in scoring for the Rangers was Bralon Evans and Andre Corley with 12 apiece. Deshaun Williams was right behind them with 10 points.

“We are happy with the win,” he said. “I thought we shot the ball real well tonight, but our shot selection was a little off but 1-0 is definitely better than 0-1,” Patton said.

Because of the youth of his team, Patton says it’s another rebuilding year but is pleased with the progress they’re making.

“It’s time to teach the young kids the winning habits even though it’s at the varsity level,” he said. “I like the depth of this team and think the kids are benefiting from the strength and conditioning. It appears as though all that lifting and training is paying off.”

Sterling’s game against Dayton Saturday was cancelled because of the Broncos’ ongoing run in the football playoffs.

The Rangers will return to action Monday at 7 p.m. when they host Pasadena. Tuesday they will be at Barbers Hill for another 7 p.m. tipoff.
