Volleyball coaches will tell you that ball-handling is the key to their sport.
Big swinging hitters and diving defensive specialists may elicit oohs and ahhs, but without a top-notch setter, a team cannot get to the top.
Junior Jessica Travis filled that role for the top team in District 19-4A and the Crosby player was the pick of league coaches as most valuable player on the All-District 19-4A squad.
Travis was joined by four Lady Cougar teammates on the first-team and Crosby’s Michael Williams was named coach of the year.
Barbers Hill, which finished second in district, produced the All-District offensive player of the year, junior Ashlee Rusk and three first-team selections.
Kingwood Park, the third-place finisher, landed sophomore Nausheen Merchant as defensive player of the year and sophomore Jasmine Johnson as district newcomer of the year.
Goose Creek Memorial, which finished fourth in district and secured its first playoff berth in this sport, had a pair of first-team all-district selections in senior hitter Ariel Reitmeier and sophomore setter Erika Hernandez.
Joining Travis on the first-team from Crosby are twin senior hitters Kacy Morris and Lacy Morris, senior libero Meagan Veach and junior hitter Jordan Sparks. Junior middle blocker Haley Dodd of Crosby was a second-team selection and the Lady Cougars had one honorable mention pick, junior Shelby Willis.
Barbers Hill senior Taylor Barnett and juniors Kirsten Terry and Audrey Hazelwood were first-team picks for the Lady Eagles. Senior Paige Vaughn and junior Jordyn Monk were second-team picks for BH, with juniors Morgan Anderson and Alissa Johnson eliciting honorable mention.
GCM sophomore Ceannia Kincade earned second-team honors with teammates Kara Hanchey and Summer Hall, both juniors, and sophomore Jenna Jackson honorable mention.
Crosby had eight girls chosen to the Academic All-District team, while Barbers Hill had seven and GCM six.
Travis, Lacy Morris, Kacy Morris, Sparks, Dodd, Veach and seniors Colby Jacks and Biana Alcala qualified for the award from Crosby.
Barbers Hill’s picks were Rusk, Terry, Anderson, Johnson, senior Hollie Dooley and juniors Kayci Broadway and Haley Khoury.
GCM all-academicpicks are Reitmeier, Hernandez, Hanchey, Kincade, junior Chelsea Wells and freshman Faith Drews.
Dayton was represented by senior Deanna Tousant on the first-team, junior Hannah Bell and sophomore Marisa Etling on the second-team, and seniors Candra Moss and Shelbie Bolton honorable mention. Bell was the Lady Broncos’ all-academic selection.
