Second-round football games are set for Friday and Saturday for Anahuac, Crosby and Dayton.
Anahuac, which had a first-round playoff bye, will take on Kirbyville in a Class 2A Division I area round game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Dayton while Crosby and Dayton will play a day-night double-header at Spring’s George Stadium.
Crosby got five 202 rushing yards and touchdowns from running back JaKacy Evans and held off Nederland 35-29 Saturday for a bidistrict win. The Cougars will play Mont-gomery, a 42-20 winner over Del Valle, in a Class 4A Division I area game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring.
Dayton, a 28-14 bidistrict winner over Vidor, will take on Waller in a 4A-Division II area game at 7 p.m. at Spring Saturday.
Three other Baytown area teams fell in bidistrict games Friday.
Lee lost to Pasadena Memorial 51-37 despite five touchdowns by sophomore Jaevon Richardson, Goose Creek Memorial was shut out 7-0 by Beaumont Central and Barbers Hill was a 21-7 loser to Port Neches-Groves.
Crosby led Nederland 35-13 early in the final period Saturday at Conroe’s Woodforest Bank Stadium before the Bulldogs came storming back.
Nederland scored two quick touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to trim Crosby’s 22-point lead to six points with nearly eight minutes left to play.
“Our mindset was we thought the game was over, so we slacked up,” Evans said. “Then we had to pick it up and push through.”
Crosby did just that, stopping two final Nederland possessions to hang on for the victory.
The District 19-4A champions improved to 9-2 on the year.
“Nederland did a great job. They had a great scheme,” Crosby coach Kevin Flanigan said. “I felt like we relaxed some. We scored on our first two series, bam-bam, and then we relaxed.
“We have to learn to be a championship team, you can’t relax. We didn’t go for the throat.”
Crosby finished with 346 yards, 255 of those yards coming via the run and Evans, an August surprise for the Cougars, had most of those. Nederland got 290 of its 338 total yards through the air and Dionte Forney, its third starting quarterback of the year, had 274 of those and passed for all three Bulldog touchdowns.
Forney, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior who had been a starting defensive end until injuries knocked out the first two Bulldog quarterbacks, passed 13 yards to Brent Salenga and 31 yards to Stephen Schlett to cut Crosby’s lead to 35-29 with 7:28 left.
Nederland had two more tries from its end of the field but couldnt advance past midfield with either.
Evans scored on runs of three, two and nine yards to give Crosby a 21-7 halftime lead. After Nederland cut the Cougar lead to 21-13, Evans scored on runs of 52 and one yards to go ahead 35-13 with 11:57 left in the game.
Dayton, 9-2, got touchdown runs from Payton Ploch and Xavier Frank, an Andres Herrera to Gamal Fowler TD pass and Robert Edwards’ fumble return for a touchdown in winning Saturday in Hunstville.
The Broncos’ opponent this weekend, Waller, downed Lockhart 28-7 in bidistrict.
Anahuac, 8-2, faced Kirbyville in last year’s playoffs, losing 43-20.
