The Lee College Rebels are back home from a tough road trip in West Texas where they finished 1-2. They will be hosting Navarro College Saturday at 7 p.m.

Lee Coach Roy Champagne expects it to be anything but easy for his Rebels.

“They (Navarro) were representatives at Nationals last year,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough game. We need to step it up mentally.”

Champagne says it will be nice to be back home after the long road trip and he is hopeful for a large home crowd.

“I want to say we might be a better home team than on the road but I don’t quite know what that means since half the season is on the road,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll play better in front of a home crowd that comes to watch us play.”

The Rebels lost their first game of the Westerner Classic at Snyder’s Western Texas College to Midland 83-59 before winning the second game against Borger’s Frank Phillips College in a nail-biter, 75-73. They fell short to Western Texas Community College 74-69.

At the beginning of the season, Midland was the No. 3 ranked team in the NJCAA. Lee College is now 3-4 on the season.

In the their game against Frank Phillips Community College, the Rebels went into the locker room at the half down by seven points but quickly fired back to take the lead.

“We came out ready to play with relative ease and built a six-point lead,” Champagne said. “Two and a half minutes later, it’s a two-point game. We should have never been in that situation. The kids lost focus in a matter of minutes.”

They could have used more of that focus in the next game against Western Texas Community College Saturday night as they fell short by five.

Andre Jackson was ejected in the first game and NJCAA rules didn’t allow him to play for the next two games.

“We’re still not playing with a full deck,” Champagne said. “I like the depth this team has but I don’t think we’re playing with all the kids that have signed on to play basketball at Lee College.”

The road trip was a long one for the Rebels but Champagne says that’s no excuse as to why they performed the way they did.

“It was a long stretch but I don’t think it had any impact as to how hard guys played,” he said. “They stayed in nice hotels, they ate well and they didn’t have to go to school.

“Obviously they weren’t in the classroom, so hopefully that won’t have any impact, but that’s just part of playing college sports.”

Champagne says the team has a lot to figure out and isn’t playing up to its full potential.

“Overall, we are still not playing to the level of expectations,” he said.

The tennis team will be recognized for its accomplishments at halftime of the Rebels game Saturday.

The Rebels are set to hit the road to take on Lon Morris College next Tuesday, Nov. 24, before returning home Dec. 2, to host San Jacinto College.
