Veterans and active duty military personnel were treated to Monday dinner by Golden Corral and honored by musical performances from members of the Goose Creek Memorial Band and the Robert E. Lee High School Show Choir.
The eighth annual Military Appreciation Dinner hosted by the restaurant invited current and former military personnel to a complimentary dinner.
“We wanted to honor those men and woman who served,” General Manager Alfred Hinojosa said.
The dinner is customary across America by the restaurant chain but the local eatery takes great pride in the tradition.
The restaurant received a proclamation from Mayor Stephen DonCarlos declaring Nov. 16, 2009 Military Appreciation Night.
“I can think of no greater call than to be here to honor our veterans,” DonCarlos said. “A well-fed soldier is a happy soldier and I suspect we are going to have a lot of happy soldiers today.”
Members of the GCM band regaled the crowed with an “Armed Forces Medley” conducted by Drum Major Ashley Miller.
“It’s an honor to be here,” Miller said. “We are glad to get the chance to play for our troops.”
The Lee Singers also performed at the event, leading the crowd in a choral version of the National Anthem.
“We are pumped and honored to sing this evening,” REL Choir Director Kym Reeves said.
Ross S. Sterling’s JROTC color guard was also in attendance and presented the American flag.
Disabled American Veterans Chaplain Jesse Wilburn presented the honored military personnel with stickers to redeem for their meals.
“I’m proud of my country, proud to have served and proud of our veterans.” Wilburn said.
The final speaker at the ceremony was Ruben F. de Hoyas, a WWII Navy veteran speaking on behalf of the American Legion Post 323.
“Its really a great service this establishment has done today,” de Hoyas said. “It means a lot to us veterans to be recognized.”
