Baytown Lee’s Jaevon Richardson put up five touchdowns in Friday night’s playoff game against Pasadena Memorial, but it wasn’t enough for the Ganders as they fell to the Mavericks 51-37.

Upping its record to 9-2 with the Class 5A Division II bidistrict win, Memorial advances to play the winner of tonight’s game between Fort Bend Elkins and Clear Springs.

Richardson hurt the Mavericks in many ways on the night, including an 81-yard punt return touchdown, and a 47-yard reception on a fake punt for a touchdown.

The fake punt touchdown put Lee within 10-7 of the Mavericks in the second period, but Memorial pulled out to a 23-7 halftime lead and was up 37-15 after three quarters.

All in all, Richardson finished the game with four receptions for 147 yards with four TDs, and the 81 yards on the return with the one touchdown.

His stellar performance wasn’t stunning to Gander coach Marvin Sedberry at all.

“He is who we thought he was,” Sedberry said. “He’s an athlete that can get multiple touchdowns, but he can only do so much.

“We tried to get him the ball as much as we could, but he can only do so much. We needed some help from the other side tonight.”

The defense for the Ganders obviously struggled, giving up over 50 points, however their main struggles came on third and fourth downs.

The Ganders gave up four touchdowns on either third or fourth down.

“You can’t expect to give up 50 points and win a ball game,” Sedberry said.

The offense for the Mavericks was run-based throughout the entire night. They ran the ball with a total of eight different backs, racking up 363 yards on 54 total carries.

They did, however, fluctuate mainly between Thaddeus Stewart and Jarmaine Pettway.

Stewart finished the game with 13 carries for 123 yards and one touchdown, while Pettway finished with 16 caries for 154 yards and one touchdown.

The Ganders’ offense struggled with turnovers all year long, but Friday was an exception to the past as they finished with zero turnovers on the night.

“We emphasized it during the week,” Sedberry said. “We worked on it at practice, emphasizing the importance of it. But you really can’t give up 50 points and expect to win a game.”

The loss puts the Ganders’ season at a close with a record of 3-8. The record is hardly impressive, but the Ganders got back on track by beating their rival Sterling, and also by making it back to the playoffs after failing the previous year.

“This season was a season of ups and downs,” Sedberry said. “The kids fought hard every day.

“Our senior class had a lot of fight in them, and they never wanted to quit.

The Ganders graduate a few starters including Dandrick Jackson, Trey Murrary, Xavier Ruben, Malcolm Ruben, Tim Smith, Trenton Warren, and Mac Havel.

“It was a fun season, and a great privilege to coach this guys,” Sedberry said.
