ANAHUAC – Zach Smith leaped high in the end zone to break up a fourth-down pass for Jacob Craft and Anahuac held off Buna Thursday night, 21-14, in the final District 23-2A game for both schools.

The regular-season game was played during the first week of the playoffs because District 23-2A has a first-round playoff bye because its opposite number district, 24-2A, does not compete in football.

Anahuac, finishing the season 8-2, will play the winner of this weekend’s Class 2A Division I bidistrict game between Kirbyville and Corrigan-Camden next week at a site and time to be determined.

Buna finished the regular season at 7-3 and will play in the 2A-Division II playoffs next week. The Cougars finished third in district with Anahuac second to East Chambers.

The Panthers rebounded from an early Buna score to take an 8-7 halftime lead on a 75-yard pass from Cody Johnson to Braxton Mayes late in the first quarter.

Anahuac running back Dewan Childress broke for an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half to expand the Panther lead to 15-7. The Panthers took advantage of a Buck Trice fumble recovery for a short drive capped by Johnson’s six-yard run for a 21-7 lead.

Buna, which rushed for 217 of its 223 total yards, scored on a four-yard Lyn Williams run with 5:29 remaining to make it a one-score game at 21-14.

The Cougars threatened in the final two minutes before their fourth-and-four pass from the Panther 20 was knocked down by Smith.

Childress led Anahuac with 145 yards rushing on 19 carries as the Panthers amassed 266 total yards, 179 on the ground.
