MONT BELVIEU – For 12-plus years, the entirety of her school-age life, Whitney Miller’s been a Barbers Hill Eagle through and through.

But she was born an LSU Tiger and an LSU Tiger she remains.

Miller, whose family moved to Texas from Baton Rouge, La., when she was a pre-schooler, signed a softball scholarship with the Tigers Wednesday at Barbers Hill High School.

“I looked at some other schools, but I’ve just always had LSU in my sights,” said the Barbers Hill senior pitcher. “It’s a family tradition, being from Baton Rouge.”

Miller’s grandparents and her three brothers, Jeff, Blake and Clay, all attended LSU.

The daughter of Ken and Judy Miller has a career record of 32-7 as a pitcher for the Lady Eagles. Last spring, she pitched Barbers Hill to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, going 17-3 with an earned run average of 0.23.

Miller also batted .420.

“This is bittersweet right now,” Eagles coach Perri Smith said, “because we’re going to lose her. But she’s going to have a good future with them.

“She’s a good kid and she’ll be hard to replace.”

But Miller still has her senior season at Barbers Hill to look forward to.

“I think we’ll still be strong,” she said. “We need to pull together as a team and go forward. But I think we’re going to do pretty good.”

Smith, the BH coach, agrees.

“I’m really confident about this season,” the coach said. “Losing (college recruits) Jene’ Gilmore and Leah Trousdale was big, but when you don’t lose your No. 1 pitcher (Miller) that helps.

“I feel like we’ll do well in the district. And Whitney’s also one of our top hitters. She’s as strong offensively as she is pitching.”

Miller played two years ago for the club team Cy-Fair Intruders and this past year for the Avengers out of Dallas. But she said playing at Barbers Hill was also a key to her development.

“There’s a lot of good competition here,” she said.
