People often compare sports to war. Sure, it’s a cool analogy; the problem is, it’s not exactly accurate. There’s a big difference between playing for your team and fighting for your country.

Ask former Lee College basketball player Dwight Taylor, who is now serving in the military in Iraq. He is experiencing the difference first-hand.

“Something I learned at Lee while playing basketball that I have been able to use in the military is to watch the little things that most people don’t pay attention to,” he said. “It is the difference between winning a game or, in the military, losing your life,” Taylor said.

Taylor attended Lee College and played for the Rebels from 2003 through 2005 before transferring to Stephen F. Austin State University. He attended SFA as a student only.

After SFA, Taylor enlisted with the Air Force in August of 2006.

“I don’t know what inspired me to enlist,” Taylor said. “I just wanted to do something different for a change.”

Going from being a college athlete at Lee College is just that, a change. Now, Taylor, whose job title in the Air Force is Security Forces, is in his second tour to Iraq.

“I was in Baghdad for my first tour,” he said. “Now I am currently in Balad, Iraq. I’ve been here since August (2009).”

As Taylor continues serving his country in Iraq, he does have at least one message for his fellow Americans.

“I just want to let everyone back in the states know that it’s very, very hot over here,” he said.
