Lee College salvaged a win Saturday from its four-day Iowa trip and will carry a 2-2 overall record into next weekend’s Westerner Classic at Western Texas College in Snyder.
“I was not pleased with how we performed this week,” Rebels coach Roy Champagne said after Saturday’s 92-73 win over Southwest Academy of Allen, Texas, the second of two games played at the Jack Blackwell Classic put on by Indian Hills Community College at Ottumwa, Iowa.
Indian Hills, ranked No. 8 in the nation in the Sporting News JUCO preseason poll, beat Lee College 83-59 Friday night. Wednesday at Council Bluffs, Iowa, Lee College lost 78-74 to Iowa Western, the team No. 2 ranked team in the nation in the official NJCAA poll.
“Hopefully, we’ll respond to a way they know they’re capable of performing.”
The Rebels used a big size advantage to pound Southwest Academy in the paint.
Andre Jackson, Lee’s 6-10, 285-pound center, scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Greg Batieste and Antone Byrd scored 14 and 13 points, with each getting seven rebounds.
Nick James and Cedric Martin each scored 11 points for LC, with Josh Micheaux dishing out eight assists and Martin seven assists.
“A win is a win is a win,” Champagne said of Saturday’s victory. “We won that game because we had more talent than the other team. But we still have a lot of growing to do.”
Byrd led the Rebels with 16 points against Indian Hills and Jackson added 14 points and five rebounds.
“Indian Hills is a very well balanced team,” Champagne said. “They’ve got very good inside players and very good perimeter players.
“They are head and shoulders better than Iowa Western.”
The opposition won’t get any easier for the Rebels, at least not immediately.
Midland College, the No. 2 ranked team by Sporting News, is Lee College’s opponent Friday at 5 p.m. in Snyder. The Rebels also play Frank Phillips College of Borger at 3 p.m., Thursday, and Western Texas College Saturday at 7 p.m.
