Lee College spikers fall in regional title match

LAREDO — Lee College’s Lady Rebels didn’t quite grab Region XIV’s brass ring, but they hauled away a lot of plaques and certificates.
San Jacinto College bounced back from a first-set loss to claim a narrow 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 26-24 win over Lee College in Saturday’s championship match of the Region XIV District M tournament.
San Jac claimed the district’s spot in the national JUCO tournament Nov. 19-21 at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The Lady Rebels, who defeated host Laredo College in Friday’s semifinal, ended the season with a 17-12 record.
Sophomore Julisa Ocasio was named conference setter of the year and freshman Stephany Salas was named conference libero of the year.
The pair also was named to the all-tournament team and Ocasio was nominated for the NJCAA All-American team.
Ocasio, Salas and sophomore Tamara Kitic were named to the all-conference and all-region teams. Lady Rebel sophomores Tiara Robinson and Christina Jacinto, along with freshman teammate Jasmine Marta, were all named to the all-conference second team.
Kitic led the Lady Rebel hitters against San Jac with 21 kills while Marta and freshman Kelsey Boyd had nine each.
Ocasio had 36 assists to go with 23 digs, a category Salas led with 28. Robinson had six blocks and Marta four. Kitic, Salas and Jacinto each had a pair of service aces.
The Lady Rebels beat Laredo 25-16, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22 Friday.
Kitic had 26 kills, Robinson 12, Marta nine and Jatoya Arnold six for Lee College. Ocasio had 55 assists and Salas logged 29 digs, 21 for Jacinto.
Robinson had eight blocks, Kitic five and Arnold four. Kitic served three aces, Salas two.
