Basketball season is here and several local teams are tipping off their seasons tonight.

The Goose Creek Memorial Patriots are at home tonight, hosting Mayde Creek. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Sterling Lady Rangers are set to host Spring DeKaney. The varsity game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

The Crosby Lady Cougars are set to hit the road to take on Clear Brook for a 7 p.m. start.

The Anahuac Panthers are set to take on Vidor. The varsity is set to take the floor for a 6 p.m. start.

The Lee Lady Ganders were originally scheduled to host Danbury but the match was cancelled because Danbury’s volleyball season is still not over.

That might be a good thing for the Lady Ganders, though, who are preparing to host a tournament this weekend in which 24 teams will participate.

Memorial is one of those 24 teams. The Patriots’ first game of the tournament is scheduled for a 12:30 tipoff Thursday against Cypress Woods. Other teams entered from around the area include Crosby, Galena Park, Channelview and Dayton.

The Ganders are scheduled to play their first game Thursday at 11 a.m. when they take on Sam Rayburn.

Lee’s Lady Ganders were the surprise of the area last year, snapping a long playoff drought. Coach Terry Gray says he’s anxious to see how talented his team is and has high expectations.

“We’re about as good as any other team yet to play,” he said.

As for those team’s expectations off the season, Gray says he hopes to have a repeat of last year’s performance when they finished the year 22-8.

“Last year was a really good season for us and we’re all just hoping for the same kind of success,” he said. “We want to return to the playoffs. We plan to have our five seniors lead us to that team goal. We just have to take each night one step at a time and hopefully come out of the other end stronger.”
