CHANNELVIEW — Sterling did everything to make sure its season ended on a high note Friday night.
The Rangers came away with a win Friday night at Maddry Stadium, beating the Channelview Falcons on their home field, 55-34.
“I’m pleased that we played so well as a team tonight,” Sterling coach Herb Minyard said. “I’m proud of these guys for fighting so hard. We played for what’s on the front on the chest and what’s inside the jersey.”
Sterling finished what had a been close contest by outscoring the Falcons 28-7 in the final period.
The Rangers scored on their first drive of the game on a 15-yard run from C.J. Mixon to go up 6-0.
It took a while for Channelview to respond but they eventually went on the board. With just under 10:30 left to play, running back Justin Hicks found the end zone from five yards out to cap off a 72-yard drive and they took the 7-6 lead over Sterling.
Just over a minute later, Sterling responded when Colton Kolaja connected with Andre Corley from 69 yards out to give the Rangers a
12-7 lead.
Channelview found the end zone two more times in the half and the two teams went into the locker room with the Rangers down 21-12.
Sterling came out in the second half and pounded the ball, rushing for 244 yards.
It didn’t take long for the Rangers to climb their way back. Kolaja scored on a quarterback sneak from 6 yards out with 8:49 left in the third quarter.
One the next Ranger possession, they found the end zone again when Chance Nelson ran in from 23 yards out.
That’s when they went on a scoring frenzy. Within just minutes of the fourth quarter, Mixon ran for a touchdown from 31 yards. Just minutes after that, he caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kolaja.
The Rangers saw the Falcons pick off a pass and run it back, but at that point, it was too little too late.
Just to be on the safe side though, Nelson found the end zone one more time from five yards out to put the nail in the coffin as the Rangers capped of the game and the season with a 55-34 win.
“I thought it was a great night for our offense,” Minyard said. “C.J.
(Mixon) did an awesome job running the ball. I though Colton did a great job orchestrating the offense and the offensive line did its job up front.
“Defensively we played well too. We got some key stops and held them in the second half. Hopefully this will give us a boost going into the off-season. I’m so proud of these seniors and glad this team was able to experience a district win.”
