HUMBLE -- The going gets extra tough today when area runners make the trek to Lone Star College’s North Harris campus for the Region III cross country meet.
The best runners and their teams from eight districts in each of five classifications A through 5A earned places in the second round of the annual cross country competition.
Competition begins at 10 a.m.
Only the top three teams and top 10 runners from each of today’s 10 races will advance to the state meet, which will be held in Round Rock Nov. 14.
But competing against the best competition possible is what athletics is all about.
“The regional meet is by far bigger than any meet we go to during the season,” Sterling coach Christie Speights said. “We do run against some of the same teams earlier in the year at meets in Houston.”
Sterling’s girls, the District 21-5A team champs, will compete in the Class 5A race along with two individual boys’ entrants Stephone Leaks from Sterling and Javier Mata from Lee.
Lee’s Marlene Martinez, the fifth-place district finisher from Lee, has elected not to run.
The Barbers Hill boys and girls teams, along with the Goose Creek Memorial girls squad, will compete in the Class 4A race along with Kevin Griffith of GCM, the seventh-place District 19-4A finisher.
Running for the Sterling girls will be Mykia Jackson, Allyson Manchestor, Torionna Benn, Esmerelda Leon, Sylvia Garcia, Kaylyn Tovar and Karen Rangel.
Running for the Memorial girls will be Judith Hernandez, Courtney Johnson, Sherkeitha Straughter, Erin Yzquierdo, Me’Lisa Williams and Courtney Spann.
Running for the Barbers Hill girls will be Larissa Rios, Kirsten Santana, Abby McManus, Sara White, Amber Jewell Watson, Mary Mudd and MacKenzie Daniels.
The Barbers Hill boys team is composed of Brandon Rivera, Luis Gonzalez, Tyler Anders, Ryan Johnson, Nathan Doisy, Jerrett Cobb, and Manuel Munoz.
