After Wednesday’s four-point loss to a team ranked No. 2 in the nation, the Lee College basketball team is anxiously looking forward to the weekend wrapup to its Iowa road swing.
The Rebels, 78-74 losers to Iowa Western in Council Bluff, will play Indian Hills Community College tonight and Southwest Academy Saturday night. Both games will be played in Ottuwma, Iowa.
“We’re playing a bigger team than we did last night (Wednesday),” Lee College head coach Roy Champagne said, “which is something that could actually play to our advantage, so our big guys can play against people their own size.”
Champagne has confidence that his team is capable of coming away with a couple of wins but says there’s a lot of work that still needs to be done.
“We know we have what it takes to compete at a high level but we still have a lot of growing to do,” he said.
Going into the next couple games, Champagne says there’s not one particular person on the team he’s looking to for production, but he expects production from the team as a whole.
“We need everybody,” he said. “We’re not looking for one player to do the scoring or rebounding. Everybody we put in, we expect double digits.”
Iowa Western is ranked No. 2 in the nation according to an NJCAA preseason poll. But given all the disadvantages of playing on the road against a tough opponent, Champagne realizes a loss is still a loss and isn’t happy falling short by four.
“We’re obviously disappointed that we lost,” he said. “We should have won that game but we allowed them too many offensive rebounds. I’m glad we competed well with them but we’re not looking for a moral victory.”
Freshman Antone Byrd came away from Wednesday night’s game with 18 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Josh Micheaux dropped 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had two blocks. Andre Jackson scored 13 and right behind him was Cameron Madlock with 10 points and nine rebounds while Alex Duncan scored 10 points of his own.
The Rebels’ record now stands at 1-1, including a season-opening win in Baytown against Lone Star College-Kingwood.
