The Baytown Community Alliance (BCA) is looking for volunteers to assist in the 13th annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner held at the Community Center Nov. 26.
The BCA event feeds thousands of needy every year during the holiday season and hopes to have the manpower to accomplish the same this year.
“We are preparing for 3,000-6,000 people,” Commercial/Community Donations Coordinator Shirley Sneed said. “We are hoping to prepare for more due to the current economic climate.”
Sneed said the organization expects a minimum of 5,000 diners at the event but also will aid homebound individuals meeting appropriate criteria. In addition, BCA will distribute hot meals to the Baytown Area Homeless Shelter.
“Things are especially tight for everyone now,” President of the BCA, Marsha Burton, said. “Hopefully we assist those in need.”
The event welcomes families and individuals in need to a home cooked turkey dinner and offers grocery assistance along with a selection of donated household items.
“We collected can goods from grocers last year,” Burton said. “We gave away over 200 boxes of groceries.”
The president says, historically volunteers show up in abundance for event preparation and the serving of the meal, but they lack aid in cleaning after the event.
“We are always so grateful for our volunteers in the morning,” Burton said.
“But, what we need are volunteers to donate their time between 2 and 5 p.m. to help with the cleaning.”
The organization asks that cleanup volunteers provided their own rubber cleaning gloves, if possible, due to limited cleaning supplies. Volunteers helping with food preparation or serving should bring hairnets.
Volunteers are invited to the Workers Meeting held inside the Community Center at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 25.
The organization says attendance at the meeting is not mandatory to volunteer at the event. Community members also can volunteer in person at the Workers Meeting.
The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and will stop serving at 2 p.m. Guest dining at the Community Center will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Deliveries for homebound clients will start at 10:30 a.m.
Those requesting home deliveries, interested in donating any household goods or volunteer information, contact Marsha Barton at 281-573-3058.
Individuals and companies wanting to donate food items, contact Shirley Sneed at 281-543-7874.
The organization asks that all food items donated be store bought according to Health Department restrictions and regulations.
