The Crosby Cougars got by Nederland in a close three set match in Tuesday night’s battle at Lee College.

The Cougars (37-2), won the match 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 thanks to the help of twin sisters Kacy and Lacy Morris.

Kacy finished the game with 15 kills and five aces, while her sister Lacy finished with seven kills and one ace.

“The twins were a big part of our offense tonight,” Coach Michael Williams said. “It’s not a surprise though, as we have been relying on our outside hitters all year long.”

The Cougars were heavily favored to win the game over Nederland (19-15), as the Cougars finished first place in District 19-4A. However, in a match that began an hour late and finished after the local news, they struggled throughout the match to pull away from the Bulldogs.

The Cougars actually trailed the entire first set, until they took the lead 23-22 in the 45th point.

“I don’t feel like we played our best tonight,” Williams said. “I thought we came out nervous, and we came out playing really tight.

“It took us a while to warm up there, but we did, and we pulled out a victory.”

After controlling the second set, the Cougars looked like they were locked in to win the third set with ease.

But they started off flat once again, and had to fight back early on. The 9-7 lead for the Bulldogs looked to be secure, but a timeout by the Cougars stopped the momentum of the Bulldogs and put Crosby back on top.

“It’s better to win ugly than to win pretty,” Williams said.

With the win, Crosby moves on to the second round of the playoffs to play Montgomery.

The match will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Spring High School.

“They are big and they are good,” Williams said. “We will need to play our best in order for us to win the match.”
