Goose Creek Memorial finished off the regular season on a high note Saturday and can concentrate on enjoying its first trip to the playoffs.
The Patriots defeated the Kingwood Park Panthers 14-7 at Stallworth Stadium. The win advances the Patriots to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in District 19-4A.
Coach Bret Boyd said this is a win his team can enjoy more.
“It’s a little different this time,” he said. “We’ve got time to evaluate ourselves and relax a little bit. It’s over. The regular season is done and we’re in the playoffs. We don’t know who we’re playing next so we can’t prepare for them so we might as well take it all in.”
Coming into Saturday’s game, Boyd said his team was preparing to stop Kingwood Park’s running game. The Patriots did just that as they held the Panthers to a total of 91 rushing yards.
However, the Patriots themselves were held to under 50 rushing yards.
“They came out with all their barrels,” Boyd said. “We were a little flat. It wasn’t our best game but we’re hoping our best game is yet to come.”
One thing that hurt the Patriots was the fact they committed 11 penalties for 115 yards.
“We have a lot of things to work on in the next two weeks,” Boyd said. “We had a lot of penalties, which was frustrating because it’s not normal for us and then you have a game like today.”
GCM started the scoring when DeMartie Allen ran it into the end zone from one yard out with just under 5:30 to go in the first half.
The teams went into the locker rooms at halftime with the score 7-0.
Cody Schumacher picked off a pass from Dylan Kubala and ran it back 18 yards for the touchdown to put his team up 14-0 with 3:35 left in the third quarter.
Kubala put his team on the board late in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run with 2:48 left to play. The touchdown and extra point by Kyle Trimm were the last seven points of the game.
The Patriots may have put the ball in the end zone more than the Panthers, but Kingwood Park led the stats, totaling 251 yards offensively to GCM’s 188 yards. The Panthers also led in first downs 15-12.
When all was said and done though, it was GCM who walked away with the win and a spot in the playoffs.
“All the credit goes to the 12 coaches,” Boyd said. “They did a great job preparing the kids and calling the plays.”
