SAN ANTONIO Baytown Christian Academy’s switch this fall to the Texas Christian Athletic League created some strange sports schedules for the school.
But Jovanna Roach, whose team played mostly against old rivals from the TAPPS league this season, wasn’t complaining Saturday after her 22-4 Bulldogs won the T-CAL state championship.
“T-CAL is way smaller than TAPPS and there were weak teams in our (T-CAL) district, but at the state level, they were good teams,” she said.
“It was very good competition for where we’re at right now.”
The Bulldogs won the championship with a 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 25-20 win over San Antonio FEAST (Family Edu-cators Alliance of South Texas), the same team they beat in four sets in Friday afternoon’s winners’ bracket semifinal.
FEAST made it to the final by winning a losers’ bracket final match Saturday morning.
BCA’s Sara Davis was named MVP of the state tournament and teammates Jessy Saenger and Ellen Moreno also earned spots on the six-player T-CAL All-State Tournament team.
“That’s a real honor to have three of the six all-state players,” Roach said.
Other BCA players include Kaitlin Anderson, Breanna Simpson, Geni Solis, Chelsea Bennett, Karah Hendricks and Sarah Rose.
“We were prepared for today’s competition,” the BCA coach said. “We knew their weaknesses and I told the girls we’re going to pick on their weaknesses. We only served to two girls all day, because we knew they were their worst passers.
“We knew their best girl and our goal was to keep the ball away from her.”
As Roach had said after beating Tyler Heritage Christian Thursday and San Angelo Cornerstone Christian and FEAST Friday, it was her team’s ball-handling more than hitting that made the difference.
“I’ve never seen us pass, serve or play defense better,” she said Saturday evening.
“Passing, serving and playing defense wins games. Hitting will come and setting will come, but if you’re passing, setting and playing defense you can beat any team, whether they’re in a UIL 5A team or whatever.”
BCA was pushed to three games in the first two rounds of the state tournament at the International Bible Center, where the format called for best-of-three game matches. And the Bulldogs needed four games in the two best-of-five matches against FEAST.
“Everybody we played gave us a run for our money,” Roach said, “because they were fighting like we were fighting.
“We came out with wins because we fought harder.”
