The Goose Creek Memorial Lady Patriots are set for their school’s volleyball playoff debut tonight.
The Lady Patriots will take on Little Cypress-Mauriceville at Lamar University’s McDonald Gym in Beaumont at 7 p.m. tonight.
It’s just one of several volleyball playoff games set for tonight, including Sterling’s Class 5A bidistrict match against La Porte, which is set for a 7:30 p.m. start at Pasadena’s Phillips Field House.
In a Lee College double-header tonight, Barbers Hill plays Beaumont Ozen at 6:30 p.m. with Crosby set to take on Nederland at 8 p.m.
Lady Patriot coach Misti Clark said she believes her team has what it takes to come away with a win.
“I’m very confident in these girls,” she said. “They want to play and are ready to get out there. They know what it’s going to take to win and I think we have a good shot.”
One thing that makes Clark so proud is the fact that the program is so young and already achieving so much.
“I’m very proud of this team,” Clark said. “They’ve put in countless hours in the gym, in the weight room and have really come together as a team. They have a lot of passion for the game and really want to win.”
Pressure often tends to increase in the playoffs but Clark said that has no affect on her team.
“They’ve never been here before so they’re not aware of that pressure,” she said. “They’re just coming out here to play and have fun.”
GCM’s young team has only one senior, Ariel Reitmeier.
“Ariel means a lot to this team,” Clark said. “She’s had over 500 kills this year, 100 aces and I don’t even know how many blocks.”
This is the fifth consecutive year for the Lady Rangers, 2009 District 21-5A champions, to be in the playoffs. But they haven’t won a playoff match since 2005 when they defeated Houston Lamar in four games.
La Porte should be familiar to the Lady Rangers.
“We played them in September at the Dickinson tournament,” Sterling coach Nadine Horne said. “I’m sure they’re probably a little different team now. I know we are. We’ve just got to come out and play them hard.”
As far as preparation goes, Horne says her team’s skills will determine if they come away with a win.
“This late in the season, there’s really not a lot you can do to prepare,” she said. “Either you have the skills or you don’t.”
Other games schools in the area playing tonight are Barbers Hill who faces Beaumont Ozen at Lee College at 6:30 p.m. and Crosby against Nederland at Lee College at 8 p.m.
