It started with a gunshot, then a scream. And out of nowhere came the sight of a ghostly specter floating past the window.
It happens every year, apparently.
Anahuac residents and other area folks joined together Friday night for the annual ghost watch at Thomas Jefferson Chambers’ home, in hopes of seeing the county’s namesake make an appearance at his old homestead where he was assassinated in 1865.
With the help of Chambers County Historical Commission members Kay and Pudge Willcox, Kenneth Standley, Bob Wheat, and Kyrie George, a crowd waited for the otherworldly sights they anticipated. And, as always, the ghost came to the scene — with a little assistance from the commission.
“This is the sixth year we have held the ghost watch,” said Bob Wheat, chairman of the commission. “The ghost watch is always an exciting event for kids.” The kids go home satisfied because they believe they have “heard” and “seen” evidence that Chambers’ ghost did appear.”
