GCM finished off the regular season on a high note Saturday and can enjoy its first trip to the playoffs with a 14-7 win over the Kingwood Park Panthers at Stallworth Stadium.
The win advances the Patriots to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in District 19-4A.
Coming into Saturday’s game, Coach Bret Boyd said his team was preparing to stop Kingwood Parks’ running game. They managed to do that as they held the Panthers to a total of 91 rushing yards.
However, the Patriots themselves were held to under 50 rushing yards.
GCM’s Demartie Allen ran it in from one yard out with just under 5:30 to go in the first half for the game’s first score.
Following the half, the Patriots’ Zach Weber picked off a pass from Dylan Kubala and ran it back 18-yards for the touchdown widen Goose Creek’s lead to 14-0.
Kubala responded by putting his team on the board late in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run with 2:48 left to play.
The Patriots may have put the ball in the end zone more than the Panthers, but Kingwood Park led the stats, totaling 251 yards offensively to GCM’s 188 yards. The Panthers also led in first downs 15-12.
“All the credit goes to the 12 coaches,” Boyd said. “They did a great job preparing the kids and calling the plays.”
