ANAHUAC — Chambers County will join other Gulf Coast counties in a newly created storm surge protection system for the upper Texas coast, county commissioners decided last week.
Rebuilding efforts in surrounding counties could aid Chambers County, former Harris County Judge Robert Echols told county commissioners, because "something that would just work for Galveston, could affect Brazoria, Harris, Chambers, Jefferson, and Orange counties as well."
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, Echols said that among the many hearings about the storm and its aftermath, one of the issues that came up with was the creation of a six county Gulf Coast Community Protection and Recovery District.
The district would not be a taxing entity and would use federal disaster money, if any, for projects.
Initially, County Judge Jimmy Sylvia would represent Chambers on the districts, but Echols said that after the first meeting it would be up to each commissioners court to name a representative.
