Many members of the community joined Eddie V. Gray on Friday to hear about the next phase for World Wide Wetlands and tour the current Gray Wetlands Center facility.

Gray, Wetlands Center founder, shared passionate enthusiasm for wetlands preservation and plans for non-profit corporation, World Wide Wetlands.

The center’s mission is to support sustainable wetlands, sustainable energy and the principles of sustainable energy development through stewardship, education and responsible use.

The Sustainable Development Energy Center will be a 6,000-square foot addition to the Wetlands Center’s current home. The Center will educate visitors about green energy by using components of the new building. The Center plans to use as many reusable resources as possible to construct and run the facility.

“Just to be able to reduce the weight of something is a great saver of energy,” Gray said. “We don’t normally think about things like weight in terms of energy.”

The center also plans to be a place for hands-on study for college-level students and where local industry officials can demonstrate their sustainable energy products.

Currently the Center facilitates Goose Creek ISD fifth grade Wetlands Ecology Program and seventh grade Liquid Science programs.

“It’s great that we were able to see our seventh graders in the program during the tour,” Mayor Stephen DonCarlos said. “The education in this program is very unique.”

Future wetlands projects include a nesting project. The project will focus on the distribution of wood duck nesting boxes. College students will earn scholarships and service learning credits for their involvement.

“Its more than just a part-time job,” Bill Gamle, Lee College faculty and Friends of Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center board member, said. “I think this program will serve students very well on a resume.”

The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center is located at 1724 Market St. and is open to the public Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., except holidays.
