The Lee College Rebels will unveil their new 2009-2010 basketball team Monday when they host Lone Star College-Kingwood in a season-opening game at 7 p.m. at the Lee College Sports Arena.

Last week the Rebels lost in a couple of scrimmages against St. Thomas University and the Houston Blaze.

Coach Roy Champagne says he’s looking forward to tipping off the season but says it’s a must for the team to improve.

“It’s time and hopefully guys have since of urgency,” he said. “We need to play a lot better than we have in exhibitions. We weren’t playing with aggression and it looked like we had no idea what was happening. The biggest thing is that we can’t miss our free throws and we have to stop turning it over.”

Champagne said, “Lone Star College-Kingwood is not a member of the NJCAA, but are an organized team at school and play almost everybody in our conference as non-conference game.”

After Monday’s game, the Rebels will travel to Council Bluff, Iowa, to take on Iowa Western Community College Wednesday before taking on Indian Hills Community College two days later.

The road games will be in front of large crowds, and Champagne is hoping to be able to say the same thing of his home crowds.

“ When we play Lone Star College, there will be about 3,000 people there and Indian Hills has about 3,500 people at their games.

“We’re hopeful the crowd support is the largest it’s ever been,” he said. “We would love for everybody and anybody to come watch us.”

The team is still dealing with injuries, but if all goes according to plan, Champagne said he plans to have Micheaux, Kevin Johnson, Alex Scotland-Williamson, Antone Byrd, and Josh Eleby as his five starters.

Normally, Champagne hosts a coach’s show on Monday nights at Double Dave’s Pizza, but because of the game, the show will be moved to Sunday at 6 p.m.
