The UIL volleyball playoffs open tonight and Baytown Lee is diving into the deep end.
The Lady Ganders, fourth-place finishers in District 21-5A, will play District 22-5A champion Pearland at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Krueger Field House at Clear Lake High School.
Pearland, which went 13-1 in district, is 23-7 overall. Lee went 5-5 in 21-5A, with sweeps of fifth- and sixth-place teams West Brook and Port Arthur and an upset of runnerup Channelview.
“That was a big win against Channelview,” Lee coach Alicia Nava recalled. “We played our game. Everyone just played together. That’s what we need to do this time: play together and stay focused.”
Lee has been led this season by the hitting of senior Deanna Hildebrand and sophomore Jackie Perez and the setting of junior Jenny Epperson. Senior Jazmine Edwards and juniors Zasha Henderson, Mary Grosjean and Haley Smith are other key players.
“Everybody’s healthy and we’re excited about going to the playoffs again,” Nava said. “Whatever the outcome, my expectation is for the team to play together.”
