HOUSTON -- If the Lee Ganders were looking for another David and Goliath story, next time someone better bring the rocks.
It was North Shore with all the weapons Friday night at Galena Park ISD Stadium in a 49-2 District 21-5A romp.
North Shore improved to 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in district while Lee fell to 3-6, 2-2. Both teams have qualified for the playoffs.
Things did start well for the Ganders as they forced North Shore to punt on their first series. The only problem was that was the last Mustang punt of the night.
Lee took possession at its 18, and four plays later on Malcolm Ruben’s first throw of the night, the Mustangs’ Devon Gibson jumped the route and dashed 55 yards with the pick six.
North Shore pushed the lead to 14-0, after forcing a Gander punt, when Alton Demby dashed 39 yards on a fake punt with 3:37 showing in the quarter.
Demby, one of the state’s top defensive backs, also set up the next North Shore score with a 33-yard fumble return to the Gander 17.
On the next play, Tim Cornett broke a few tackles and dashed to the end zone for a 21-0 margin.
Cornett was a thorn all night for the Ganders, as he led all rusher with 192 yards on 15 carries before turning it over to the sibs in the final period.
The Ganders on the evening only managed 75 yards of offense against the stingy Mustang defense. QBs Nathaneil Scott and Ruben were under constant pressure from the blitzing Mustangs.
Scott did complete all three of his passes, while Ruben hit on four of 12 on the night.
Receiver Jaevon Richardson was Lee’s top ground-gainer, gaining 36 yards on five pass receptions.
Lee did avoid the shutout, by forcing a safety when Demby was not able to handle a bad North Shore punt snap with 5:47 left in the game.
North Shore QB Keenan Gibson had TD tosses of 49 and three yards to Deandrew White and finished with 75 yards passing. White, who recently accepted a scholarship offer from Alabama, led the receivers with 61 yards.
The Ganders finish the regular season by hosting Port Arthur Memorial next week, while North Shore travels to Beaumont to face West Brook for the district title.
