HOUSTON -- Barbers Hill wasn’t ready to end its season and the Eagles made sure they didn’t Friday night.
The Eagles dispatched the North Forest Bulldogs 38-7 to claim the fourth and final playoff spot from District 19-4A, ending a two-year absence from the post-season.
“They’re a very athletic football team,” Barbers Hill coach Don Price said of the Bulldogs. “We knew we had to come out and play well against them.
“We still have work to do. We made some mistakes we have to eliminate, but we did what we had to do to get in.”
Eagles quarterback Matthew Viverette ran for the first touchdown of the game from three yards out and later threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cade McDonald.
McDonald replaced Viverette under center late in the fourth quarter, scoring the last touchdown of the game on a six-yard run.
Logan Stubbs led Barbers Hill in rushing with 193 rushing yards and a touchdown that came less than a minute before halftime. The team totaled 371 rushing yards on the night.
The defense shut out the Bulldogs offense, allowing only 136 yards total offense, and forced them to punt six times.
The only touchdown for a North Forest team that finished the year 0-10 came in the third quarter on a 64-yard interception return from Patrick Richards.
Price said his team is fortunate to have a spot in the playoffs because they’ve had a few bumps in the road throughout the season.
“We lost four football games by 13 points (actually 15 points), so it’s nice we still got a shot,” he said. “We’re going to try to get better this week and hopefully heal up and get ready to go for bidistrict.”
Friday night’s win gives the Eagles a record of 5-5 overall and 4-3 in District 19-4A.
