CROSBY —The Cougars took the field on Friday night aiming to finish the season undefeated in district, and they were heavily favored against Galena Park.
Crosby achieved its goal, but only with a nail-biting 41-34 win. The pesky Yellowjackets were not subdued until the game’s final two minutes.
The back-and-forth game was tied until quarterback Dominic Merka threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game, a 24-yarder to Paul Erwin with 3:45 remaining.
Galena Park had a chance to tie it with two minutes to go, but Cougar M.J. Mathis came up with an interception in the end zone to seal a Crosby victory.
“The first half wasn’t very good, but we were able to pull it together and responded well,” Crosby coach Kevin Flanigan said. “We’ve had a great season with these kids.”
The Cougars, who began the season with lopsided losses to Ennis and Port Neches-Groves, now improve to 7-2 overall and 7-0 in district and Galena Park drops to 1-8 (1-6).
Crosby has a non-district game against Bay City left to play next week, but Flanigan expressed his feelings about the Cougars’ great season.
“A lot of people counted us out early on,” he said, “but they didn’t realize what we had inside. That’s what really counts.”
The first half was a chess match and the second was a show. It was close for the entire match and came down to the wire.
The second half began with a bang for both teams.
Crosby started it off as Merka threw a 75-yard touchdown bomb to Forrest Tyler to give Crosby a 13-12 lead.
It took the Yellowjackets a mere 15 seconds to answer back when Lamont Green caught a 56-yard TD pass of his own from QB Byron Smith.
Merka ran a touchdown in from 13 yards a couple of drives later to put the Coogs within a point at 20-19.
Another TD on the ground, this one from JaKacy Evans for one yard, put Crosby on top. A two-point conversion made the score 27-20.
GP wasn’t willing to give up as Smith threw another gem to tie it up, this one for 59 yards and to receiver Brandon Broussard.
The fourth quarter began and Crosby was ready to go.
Tyler caught another TD from Merka for 23 yards.
Yellowjacket running back Jomaun White broke a 28-yard touchdown run to even it yet again at 34-34.
Merka was the main source of Crosby’s offense as he completed 12 of his 22 passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns and carried the ball 167 yards on just seven attempts.
Crosby struck first, taking only four minutes to score and gave the impression that it would be doing this early and often. But this was not the case.
Neither team scored again until the second quarter when Galena Park tailback Cregory Evans pushed in a two-yard TD run.
The Jackets scored once more toward the end of the first half when quarterback Smith ran one in for a yard to give his team a 12-7 lead at intermission.
