Sterling girls’ cross country coach Christie Speights got a big present last month when she gave birth to a baby boy.
Her Lady Rangers gave her another present Thursday.
Senior Mykia Jackson and freshman Allyson Manchestor finished second and third individually to lead Sterling to its second straight team title in the District 21-5A cross country meet held at Gentry Junior School.
The Lady Rangers also got a sixth-place finish from sophomore Torionna Benn in edging Port Arthur Memorial 57-58 for first place in the team scoring.
“We won last year, but I knew going into it, it was going to be another tight race, because everybody was pretty even,” Speights said.
The Lady Ranger coach just returned from maternity leave two weeks ago, but during her absence, Cristina Mancheno, a former Lee College tennis champion in her first year as Speights’ assistant coach, oversaw the team’s practices and competitions.
“The kids have worked hard this year,” Speights said. “They were working hard before I left, but she (Mancheno) maintained it. I owe her big. I easily could have come back from my leave and not had a team.”
The top three teams and 10 individuals from the varsity races advance to compete in the Region III-5A meet next Saturday, Nov. 7, at North Harris County Community College.
Besides Sterling and Memorial, West Brook finished third among 21-5A girls and will be taking a team to regionals. Two actually, since the Bruin boys finished second to Channelview in the boys’ team standings. North Shore placed third among boys.
Individually, Lee qualified one girl runner for regionals in fifth-place finisher Marlene Martinez. The Lady Ganders were sixth in the team standings.
Sterling senior Stephone Leaks finished third in the boys’ race, an improvement from fourth a year ago, and Lee junior Javier Mata finished fourth. They are the only two to advance to boys’ regionals from their two schools as the Ganders placed fourth and Sterling did not have the minimum five runners required for a team.
Jackson is known as “KeKe” around Sterling, where she’s better known as a volleyball and basketball player than a runner. She ran in only two cross country meets this season prior to Thursday, yet she led all the girl runners for most of the two-mile race.
“They started catching up with me as we were finishing the first lap and someone (West Brook’s Ashley Wright) came and caught me,” Jackson said. “I kept trying to keep up my pace.”
Wright covered the muddy course in 14 minutes, 32 seconds and Jackson was second in 14:38 with Manchestor next at 15:01.
All of Tuesday’s runners believed the standing water and mud which made for some hard slogging added as much as two minutes to their finishing time.
Christopher Gutierrez won the 5,000-meter boys race in 17:23 with Anthony Aguinaga of Channelview next in 17:43. Leaks and Mata crossed in 18:17 and 18:24.
