MONT BELVIEU While Kingwood Park made good on the foregone conclusion that it would rule the 2009 District 19-4A cross country meet, other area teams ran Thursday to qualify for regional.
Meet host Barbers Hill will carry both its boys and girls varsity teams to the Region III-4A meet next Saturday, Nov. 7, at Lone Star College-Humble.
Goose Creek Memorial’s girls also qualified
Barbers Hill finished in second place in the girls’ race with a total of 50 points. Goose Creek Memorial came in third with 80 and wrapped up the final girls’ qualifying spot for regionals. Dayton’s girls finished fourth with 109.
Meanwhile, the Kingwood Park girls were nearly perfect, with their runners finishing 1-2-3-4-6 for 16 points.
Comparatively, the Kingwood Park boys were a bit off their schoolmates’ pace, finishing with 22 points after a 1-2-3-5-11 finish.
Galena Park finished in second place for the varsity boys with 54 points as Barbers Hill came in at third with 68.
GCM’s Patriots missed qualifying as a team with their fourth-place, 109-point finish, but their Kevin Griffith qualified individually for regional with a sixth-place finish. Dayton closely followed at fifth place with 145 points.
Larissa Rios led the BH girls, finishing in just over 13 minutes to come in at fifth place. Her teammate, Kirsten Santana, finished in eighth place.
Eagle head coach Deann Fudge was happy with her team’s performance as well.
“ I’m really pleased with how the girls ran today,” she said. “Larissa Rios and Kirsten Santana really stepped it up.”
As for Barbers Hill boys, Brandon Rivera came in at seventh place, finishing in 18 minutes and 50 seconds. Luis Gonzalez came in at 10th place, finishing in 19:17 and Tyler Anders came in 17 seconds later to finish in 13th place.
“Brandon Rivera ran well, and I’m also excited about freshmen Luis Gonzalez and Tyler Anders,” Fudge said. “They really competed strong for freshmen.”
Even though they didn’t finish first, the GCM coaches were pleased with their teams’ performances.
“ Our boys team didn’t qualify for regionals, but Kevin Griffith placed sixth and he’s on his way to regionals,” GCM boys coach Jeff Keener said. “He really ran a great race”
GCM girls’ head coach Kevin Fletcher said he’s especially proud of how his team ran.
“The girls did real well today,” he said. “We ran great and qualified for regionals.”
Judith Hernandez of GCM finished in 10th place. Her teammates, Courtney Johnson and Sherkeitha Straughter came in at 13th and 15th place for the Lady Patriots.
“The girls really did a great job keeping their focus,” Fletcher said. “They kept their eye on the goal of getting to regionals, which has been our goal from the beginning of the years and we met that goal today. It’s nice to see all that hard work pay off.”
